HOT TAKES
COOL DEBATES.
Transforming seventh graders into passionate debaters—one ridiculous hot take at a time.
Pedagogically sound!
Wow!
WHAT IS HOT TAKES?
Think of Hot Takes as your chance to drop a spicy opinion—then back it up. Build a mini slideshow, make your case (“Shrek is peak cinema” or “pizza rolls are better than pizza”), and let your classmates come at you with questions and counter-arguments. It’s part debate, part roast, all learning!
How does it work?
1
Drop Your Hot Take
Pick a claim so ridiculous your classmates can’t help but argue. “Cereal is soup” or “Commas don’t matter” or “French fries are overrated” will do nicely. The goal is simple: get the class buzzing.
2
Make your argument
You’re the lawyer, your opinion is the client. Gather “evidence,” pick your best exhibits, and prepare a few knockout arguments. A slideshow is your courtroom—make it count.
3
Let the Debate Begin
Present your hot take, then pass the mic. Your classmates get to roast, challenge, and argue back. You hold your ground, sharpen your arguments, and secretly become a better writer and speaker while you spar.
“A hot dog is a sandwich.”
“Ketchup is the worst condiment!”
“Cereal is soup.”
The Benefits of Hot Takes
🔥Teaches Clear Communication
Doing Hot Takes helps participants practice expressing ideas with clarity, organizing thoughts, and presenting opinions with confidence—skills that carry into every aspect of life.
🔥Builds Real Confidence
Standing up to present a bold opinion in front of peers is a low-stakes way to practice public speaking. Over time, participants feel more comfortable taking risks and sharing their voices.
🔥Strengthens Critical Thinking
By making a claim and defending it, participants practice reasoning, weigh evidence, and anticipate counterarguments. It’s playful, but it sharpens serious intellectual muscles.
🔥Encourages Active Participation
Because the topics are light and fun, people feel safe taking risks. The result is a room full of voices, energy, and authentic engagement.
